Will I Lose Weight If I Turn Vegetarian?

9 Comments 06 January 2012

Ok so for a while I wanted to turn vegetarian. It’s not hard for me to stop eating meat, but I will still eat cheese and drink milk, because thats where I get my calcium, and I hate taking pills so I have no other choice. I`m not turning vegetarian because I want to lose weight, but just the thought that an animal was killed in order for me to be able to eat that makes me feel bad. I used to lose seafood, but then I started thinking of how cute the shrips are..it made me stop eating it. It sounds stupid and please don’t judge me.
I was also wondering if I will lose weight if I do this, and how fast. I also cut out sweets and pop. I really want to change my lifestyle because Im starting to feel bad, and I hate the way I look. I am not obese, but i’m overweight.
Please help me with pros and cons about being vegetarian if you can, and about the weight loss. Don’t tell me that instead of doing this I should work out, well that doesnt work for me because I am always busy, and I`m not motivated enough to start working out, and I usually don’t feel good.
Thanks :)

Maybe but i have a friend who is a vegetarian and has been for many years and she’s been big and I haven’t seen any changes in her weight. However, maybe she just eats too big of portions or eats too often.

You can lose weight this way. But you have to make sure you are getting lots of protein, vitamin B12, and iron. And make sure you don’t eat a ton of carbs. Trust me, that is the vegetarians worst nightmare. If you turn to carbs and you are not eating meat then that is all you body is running on and it will make you actually put on weight. Celery and radishes are amazing. They are call “negative calorie” foods because you actually burn more calories while eating them then the vegetable actually holds (celery stick has 6 calories and it burns 8 calories just to eat it) Hope this helps. Good luck.

I don’t think you will lose weight by not eating meat… but i do think that if you really want to lose weight you should do more than that. so you don’t want to work out that fine! but if you really want to see changes you should stop eating things with dough or sweets and a whole wheat bread ( the one with not a lot of calories) and I promise you, you will see some changinges in a bout a month! good luck!

    WildRose,
I don’t mean to be offensive, but is there a reason you didn’t read the question 10 below yours that asks the exact same thing? And I know this question is asked in here on a pretty much daily basis.
Burn more calories than you eat and you lose weight. Eat more calories than you burn and you will gain weight.
It doesn’t really matter if it’s 1000 calories in dead popcorn shrimp or 1000 calories in cheese pizza. Your body pretty much metabolizes it all the same way.
But, I know you don’t want to hear it, you need to exercise. I don’t mean working out. I mean cardio exercise. You have 3 excuses here, all of which are BS. If you don’t feel good, go to the doctor and find out why. If you aren’t motivated, then you need to find motivation. If you don’t have time, you make time. I worked 3 jobs and went to college full time and still managed to get to the gym 4 days a week by going at 5:30am. ANd I’m an 8+ hour a night sleeper or I can’t function. You may find that borrowing a friend’s dog to go on a walk for an hour each day helps motivate you and helps clear your head.

    Depends how much you eat.

You can, but it does not mean you will. Even vegetarians gain weight… I did and I eat vegan lol
Btw there’s more calcium sources than milk, like dark leafy greens, B12 is the only major issue a vegan would have, although they fortify things like soy milk so you can get your B12 that way.

Many vegetarians and vegans substitute meat calories with excessive grain/cereal/flour and sugar foods instead, which is even more unhealthy (and more prone to make you gain weight). Many also eat a lot of processed, prepackaged vegetarian/vegan foods, which like almost all processed foods…are not healthy either.
If you minimize the grain/cereal/flour (particularly cutting out wheat/rye/barley foods) and sugary foods, and focus mostly on fresh whole healthy foods instead (many different vegetables, lower-sugar fruits, no-oil-added nuts/seeds, low/no sodium legumes, etc.), it is virtually impossible for a normal person not to be lean and healthy.

a lot of people gain weight from going veggie. like my friend, she went vegetarian and she gained like 15lbs.

You probably won’t lose weight unless you exercise. If you ate alot of meat before turning vegetarian you’ll probably be hungry alot more until you get used to eating just vegetables, milk and cheese. Some exercises I do are:
1.) start in a sit up position, then lean back as far as you can go then hold. Do it for as long as you can(60 secs)
2.)Lay on your back, facing the ceiling, legs straight out on the floor, arms by your side straight palms facing ceiling, then lift your legs up and hit your heels together for as long as you can (60 secs).
results are pretty fast. Well for me they were. I’m a vegan, so I don’t eat any products that come from animals and I don’t use any animal products. C=
